Branched bur reed (Sparganium erectum)

Branched bur reed (Sparganium erectum) is a striking tall vigorous British native pond plant, with bright green arching sword shaped leaves and unusual decorative greenish-white flower heads in June/July followed by prickly green then brown fruit.  A good plant for food and shelter for wildlife and nesting wildfowl and provides good strong upright leaves for emerging Dragonfly nymphs, not suitable for small ponds.  Please note this will be cut back after flowering as the foliage starts dying back.Sparganium Dioscorides’ name for bur-reed; erectum upright erectHeight: 100-150cmPlanting position: Pond marginal shelf up to 40cm deep; or very wet soil in sun or part shadeForm: 9cm in a solid pot -please select size belowRecommended basket size min./ideal: 2 litre round/5 litre square(Recommended basket sizes are for potting up 9cm (0.5 litre) plants only as these are supplied in solid pots.  Larger sized plants are already in aquatic baskets so can go straight in the pond, however they may need potting up or splitting at some point)
