Description Learning about black walnut was something of a revelation to me. It truly doesn’t look like much in the lumber yard. Rough edges and uneven cuts make it hard to imagine the beauty inside. I finally took a chance when making cheese boards last December and now I’m smitten. Pulling that grain out of the rough cuts and watching the shine develop as the oil is applied is a truly emotional moment for me. And shaping it into something useful is an added bonus. The Black Walnut Serving Tray shows off the gorgeous grain off the wood while remaining a practical part of your kitchen collection. Showing off the ramekin nestled into its home on the board This serving tray begins as a slab of wood and over a dozen or so steps the shape and beauty begin to emerge. Templates help, but the final touches come by hand, making each a unique piece. Early on in the process the tray starts to take shape The round cavity is sized to hold a ramekin (one is included; let me know if you want more and we can work something out) for dips or sauces. The other side can hold veggies, chips, bread, or just about anything else. The shape of the serving tray is obvious at this stage, with the curved edges starting to show The wood is sealed with Odie’s Oxi Oil, a food-safe wax and oil blend. It protects the wood and shows off the grain beautifully, It also is designed to darken over time, making each piece that much more unique. Letting the oil soak in before buffing the black walnut tray to a high shine and shipping it out Overall dimensions are approximately 14″ long, 8″ wide and 1.5″ tall, with the cavity about 1″ deep.
